VA's Office of the Medical Inspector, Washington D.C.

While working in Washington, D.C. as a Presidential Management Fellow in 2013 I was invited by Veterans Affairs' Office the Medical Inspector to deliver a custom training on advanced public speaking techniques specifically for the office's personnel who brief facility personnel upon conclusion of their site evaluations.

From Dr. John Pierce, Chief Medical Inspector of the VA at the time:

"Accurate communications, written or verbal, is very hard.  One of my favorite saying is: I know what I said, you know what you hear, and they are not the same thing!  But often every one nods their heads in apparent agreement and returns to work but sometimes they go in opposite directions because of unintended misunderstandings. There is no such thing as too much training on communications skills. Matt's training helped us to continue to improve our skills."

  • "Great presentation! Needs to be part of the Leadership Academy."
  • "Great lecture! Please do more like this!"
  • "Loved the props. Exercises also helpful."

These quotes are from medical center personnel at two workshops I delivered at Ft. Belvoir Community Hospital in Virginia in 2014 - one on the Three Commandments of Public Speaking, and a second on Advanced Public Speaking Techniques. Great crew!

K-12 Educators in Tennessee

I had the pleasure of working with roughly 300 Monroe County teachers at the beginning of the 2015-2016 academic year at their annual In-Service at Sequoyah High School.

According to Monroe County (TN) Superintendent of Schools, Tim Blankenship, "teachers enjoyed a powerful motivational speech by Dr. Matthew Deaton, renowned public speaking author and coach. Dr. Deaton’s speech emphasized the importance of turning renewed commitments to education into achievable goals. To say teachers left the In-Service inspired would be an understatement. Teachers went back to their classrooms with lists outlining goals for providing students with the best educational opportunities possible, as well as professional strategies for meeting identified goals" (Monroe County Advocate & Democrat 8/10/15).
